Research Question

How efficiently is immunoglobulin Y (IgY) transferred from breeding hens to egg yolks and day-old chicks, and does that transfer differ among the four poultry breeds examined?

Study Design

This was a comparative observational study involving 48 apparently healthy laying hens, with 12 hens from each of four poultry breeds or lines: Vanraja, Gramapriya, BlackRock, and KalingaBrown. The hens received a Salmonella inactivated polyvalent vaccine. Researchers collected blood and eggs, measured total protein and IgY, and compared antibody concentrations in hen serum, egg yolk, and day-old chick serum.

What Researchers Did

The researchers measured egg and yolk weights, total protein concentrations, total IgY concentrations, and Salmonella-specific antibody transfer. They compared values among the four groups and calculated the apparent transfer of antibodies from hens to egg yolks and from hens to newly hatched chicks.

Backyard Poultry Relevance

For backyard breeders, this study helps explain why the immune history of the hen matters to newly hatched chicks. Hens can pass useful antibodies through the egg, but the transfer is neither complete nor guaranteed to be identical among chicks. A healthy-looking hen may not have antibodies to a particular disease, and even a vaccinated breeder flock can produce chicks with varying antibody levels.

The practical implication is that maternal immunity should be treated as temporary early support. It should not replace chick vaccination when vaccination is indicated, and it should not be used as the sole basis for choosing vaccine timing. Breeder vaccination records, hatchery records, disease risk, vaccine labels, veterinary guidance, and a sound backyard biosecurity plan remain important.

Hens pass some of their antibodies to chicks through the egg yolk. This study found that chicks with hens carrying more IgY generally began life with more IgY, but chicks received only part of the hen’s antibody level.
