Research Question
Can new real-time TaqMan PCR assays detect Bordetella avium with improved analytical sensitivity, specificity, efficiency, repeatability, and reproducibility compared with a previously available assay?
Study Design
This was an analytical diagnostic-assay development and validation study. Researchers selected B. avium-specific genomic targets, designed two TaqMan real-time PCR assays, and evaluated them with B. avium isolates and a broad panel of other microorganisms.

Bordetellosis is most important in young turkeys, and respiratory signs overlap with many other diseases. Culture can be difficult when faster-growing organisms are present. A validated PCR gives diagnostic laboratories another way to detect B. avium from suitable samples.
For backyard keepers, the practical lesson is not to order or interpret PCR independently. Submit fresh appropriate samples through a veterinarian or diagnostic laboratory, provide full flock history, and interpret a positive result alongside tracheal lesions and testing for other respiratory pathogens.
