What makes a celadon egg blue?
A true celadon egg is blue through the shell rather than simply carrying a surface tint. The color comes from pigment deposited as the shell forms. That is different from the brown speckling commonly seen on Coturnix eggs.
Because celadon is an eggshell trait, you cannot identify it by looking at feather pattern or plumage color. Birds with very different appearances may carry the same egg-color genetics, while two similar-looking birds may produce very different results.
Why recessive genetics matter
The celadon trait is recessive. Birds can carry the gene without every mating immediately producing the blue-egg result a buyer expects.
A breeding program needs accurate parentage, egg records, and enough test hatches to distinguish proven producers from birds that are merely assumed to carry the trait. Without those records, breeders may unknowingly sell carriers as true celadons and weaken consistency within the line.
True blue lines require selection
One blue egg is exciting, but it is not a breeding program. Reliable lines are built by selecting for consistent egg color while also protecting vigor, fertility, hatchability, structure, and production.
Selecting only for the bluest shell can create problems if the breeder ignores the whole bird. Egg color should be one recorded trait within a larger breeding goal.
Are celadon eggs harder to hatch?
Celadon eggs are not automatically more difficult to incubate. Hatch results still depend on breeder nutrition, fertility, egg handling, storage, incubator calibration, temperature, humidity, turning, and ventilation.
When a celadon line hatches poorly, investigate the same fundamentals you would examine in any Coturnix breeding group instead of blaming the shell color.
Why egg color changes
A hen’s egg color can vary through her laying cycle and often becomes lighter with age. Photographing eggs under consistent lighting and keeping dated records makes comparisons more useful.
